Normal Numbers from Steinhaus’ Viewpoint

چکیده
Abstract. In this paper we recall a non-standard construction of the Borel sigma-algebraB in [0, 1] and construct a family of measures (in particular, Lebesgue measure) in B by a completely non-topological method. This approach, that goes back to Steinhaus, in 1923, is now used to introduce natural generalizations of the concept of normal numbers and explore their intrinsic probabilistic properties. We show that, in virtually all the cases, almost all real number in [0, 1] is normal (with respect to this generalized concept). This procedure highlights some apparently hidden but interesting features of the Borel sigma-algebra and Lebesgue measure in [0, 1].

Algorithmic randomness and stochastic selection function
We show algorithmic randomness versions of the two classical theorems on subsequences of normal numbers. One is Kamae-Weiss theorem (Kamae 1973) on normal numbers, which characterize the selection function that preserves normal numbers. Another one is the Steinhaus (1922) theorem on normal numbers, which characterize the normality from their subsequences. In van Lambalgen (1987), an algorithmic...
متن کامل2-connected and 2-edge-connected Steinhaus graphs
The numbers of 2-connected and 2-edge-connected Steinhaus graphs with n vertices are determined for n¿ 6. The possible generating strings of 2-connected and 2-edge-connected Steinhaus graphs are classi0ed. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملVisualizing the possibilities
First, Johnson-Laird (1983, pp. 157, 165) de nes images as models from a particular viewpoint, but this is inessential to the idea of an image. For example, the transformation of an image from an occulocentric frame to an object-centered frame is just one of many transformations it may undergo in being put into more abstract form. It seems arbitrary to treat di erently images in di erent refere...
متن کاملSteinhaus’ Problem on Partition of a Triangle
H. Steinhaus has asked whether inside each acute triangle there is a point from which perpendiculars to the sides divide the triangle into three parts of equal areas. We present two solutions of Steinhaus’ problem. The n-dimensional case of Theorem 1 below was proved in [6], see also [2] and [4, Theorem 2.1, p. 152]. For an earlier mass-partition version of Theorem 1, for bounded convex masses ...
متن کاملA universal sequence of integers generating balanced Steinhaus figures modulo an odd number
In this paper, we partially solve an open problem, due to J. C. Molluzzo in 1976, on the existence of balanced Steinhaus triangles modulo a positive integer n, that are Steinhaus triangles containing all the elements of Z/nZ with the same multiplicity. For every odd number n, we build an orbit in Z/nZ, by the linear cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo n, which contains infi...
